How a long-distance move from London is planned

Long distance removals from Phi Movers take you from London to anywhere in mainland UK — or bring you into London from elsewhere — with the same London-based crew loading, driving and unloading. Whether you’re moving to Manchester, Bristol, Leeds, Edinburgh or a village in Cornwall, the job is planned around the route, the legal limits on driving time and the size of your home, then quoted as a fixed price before you book.

A long-distance move is a different job from a cross-London one. A few hundred miles means the timing has to work: loading early enough to arrive while it’s still light, legal breaks for the driver, keys being released at the other end, and parking for a large van on a street the crew has never seen. For bigger homes or the longest routes, the sensible plan is often a two-day move — load and drive on day one, an overnight stop, then deliver fresh on day two.

You’ll choose between a dedicated van, which carries only your belongings on your dates, and a part load, where you share space on a van already heading your way and pay less in return for more flexible timing. We’ll explain which suits your move, give you a written inventory-based quote and tell you exactly what’s included — so you can compare us properly with any other long distance moving company.

Planning a London to anywhere-in-the-UK move

A cross-London move is mostly about parking and stairs. A long-distance move adds the clock. The crew has to load, drive a few hundred miles within legal driving limits, take proper breaks and still arrive with enough daylight and energy to unload safely — and the keys at the new address have to be released in time. We plan each of those before we quote, not on the day.

Drivers of larger removal vehicles must follow drivers’ hours rules, which set maximum driving time and require regular breaks. That’s why a removal van can’t simply drive non-stop from London to Scotland. For shorter routes — London to the Midlands, the South West or the North West — the whole move often fits in one long day. For the longest routes, or for large homes that take most of a day to load, a two-day move is safer and usually less stressful.

  • Route and driving time checked against legal break requirements
  • Arrival window agreed around key release at the new property
  • Parking checked at both ends — permits, bay suspensions, narrow streets
  • One-day move for shorter routes and smaller homes
  • Two-day move with an overnight stop for large homes or the longest routes

Two-day moves and overnight stops

On a two-day move we load on day one, drive part or all of the route, and the crew rests overnight with your belongings loaded and secured in the van. Day two starts early with unloading at your new home, so the most careful part of the job isn’t done at the end of a very long day.

A two-day move also helps when completion happens late in the day. Rather than racing to unload in the dark, we can load the day before completion and deliver once the keys are released. We’ll tell you when we think a two-day plan is the right one and why.

Dedicated van or part load?

A dedicated van carries only your belongings, on your dates, by the most direct route. It’s the right choice for a full house, fixed completion dates, or when you need collection and delivery on the same or consecutive days.

A part load means sharing a van with other customers’ loads travelling the same way. You pay for the space you use, so it’s usually cheaper for a studio, a one-bed flat or a few items of furniture — in return for flexible date windows rather than fixed times. We’ll price both where they make sense.

  • Dedicated: your dates, direct route, best for full homes
  • Part load: shared van, lower cost, flexible date windows
  • Both: London-based crew, wrapping, loading, unloading and insurance

How to choose the best long distance moving company

If you’re comparing long distance moving companies, the cheapest headline price isn’t always the cheapest move. Ask every firm the same questions, give them the same inventory, and compare like with like. A good mover will answer all of these clearly and in writing.

  • Fixed price or estimate? A fixed price shouldn’t change unless what you’re moving changes; an estimate can grow on the day
  • Is the quote based on a proper inventory or a survey (home or video), or a guess from the number of bedrooms?
  • What insurance is included — goods in transit and public liability — and what are the limits and exclusions?
  • Are fuel, tolls, congestion and ULEZ charges and any overnight stop included in the price?
  • Who does the move — the firm’s own crew, or is it passed to a subcontractor?
  • How many crew and what size of vehicle, and will it be one day or two?
  • What’s included: wrapping, dismantling and reassembly, packing materials?
  • What deposit is asked for, and what are the cancellation and date-change terms?
  • What happens if keys are released late or completion is delayed?

Preparing for a long-distance move

Book early if you can, especially for Fridays and month-ends. Declutter before you get quotes so you’re not paying to move things hundreds of miles you’ll throw away at the other end. Label boxes by room, keep an essentials box with you, and carry documents, keys, medication and valuables in your own car.

How it works, step by step

We’ve refined our process across London moves every week to keep everything simple and predictable. Here’s exactly what happens from your first enquiry through to completion.

  1. Survey and inventory

Send both postcodes, your move date and a room-by-room list, or book a free home or video survey. An accurate inventory sets the van size and crew, and it’s the only way a long-distance fixed price stays fixed — anything left off the list may not fit on the day.

  2. Route and timing plan

We work out the driving time, legal breaks for the driver and whether the move fits in one day or needs an overnight stop. We’ll check key release times at the new property and parking at both ends, and agree a realistic arrival window with you.

  3. Packing and loading

On loading day the crew protects floors and doorways, wraps furniture, dismantles anything that needs it and loads the van so nothing can shift over a long journey. If you’ve booked packing, it’s usually done the day before.

  4. The journey

The van travels by the planned route with breaks built in. On two-day moves your belongings stay loaded and secured in the van overnight while the crew rests, ready for an early start. You’ll have a contact number for updates throughout.

  5. Delivery and setting up

At your new home we unload, place furniture and boxes in the rooms you choose and reassemble anything we took apart. Check everything against your inventory before the crew leaves, and payment of the balance is taken on completion.

  • Distance and route, and whether an overnight stop is needed
  • The volume of your belongings and the van size required
  • Dedicated van or part load
  • Crew size and the number of days the move takes
