The Ultimate Moving House Checklist for London (2026)

Don't leave anything to chance. Our 50-point moving house checklist covers everything from 8 weeks out to moving day itself — specifically tailored for London moves.

Moving house in London requires more planning than almost anywhere else in the UK. Parking restrictions, congestion zones, narrow streets, and high-rise buildings all add complexity. This checklist keeps you on track from start to finish.

8 Weeks Before Moving Day

Start gathering quotes from removal companies — get at least three. Book your chosen company as soon as possible; London movers get booked up fast, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. Notify your landlord or estate agent of your move-out date in writing. Begin sorting through your possessions and start decluttering.

6 Weeks Before

Notify key organisations of your address change: HMRC, DVLA, your bank, your GP, your employer. Set up mail redirection with Royal Mail — this takes 5 working days and costs around £33 for 3 months. Research parking suspension requirements — if the van needs to park on a public road, you may need to apply to the council for a suspension 14 days in advance.

4 Weeks Before

Start packing non-essential items. Order packing materials — boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape. Take photos of all electronic connections before unplugging. Arrange for children or pets to be looked after on moving day.

2 Weeks Before

Confirm your booking with your removal company and share any specific instructions (access codes, parking info, fragile items). Defrost your freezer. Return any borrowed items. Collect any items from dry cleaners or repair shops.

1 Week Before

Pack everything except daily essentials. Label all boxes clearly with room and contents. Prepare your essentials bag. Confirm the logistics with your movers one final time — share a contact number for moving day.

Moving Day

Do a final walk-through of the property. Check all cupboards, loft, and garden. Take meter readings at both properties. Return keys as agreed. At the new property, direct movers room by room — it saves unpacking time.

After Moving In

Update your electoral roll registration (gov.uk/register-to-vote). Test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Find the location of your stopcock, fuse box, and gas meter. Introduce yourself to the neighbours — London can feel anonymous, but good neighbours are invaluable.
